Passengers travelling on Brighton and Hove buses faced above inflation fare rises this week of as much as 11 per cent.

The company, with services running through Lewes to Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, launched its ‘new ticket deals and prices’ on Sunday, its third increase in just 18 months.

The short hop and ordinary single fares went up by 10p to £1.60 and £2.30 and the ‘on bus’ Saver by 20p to £4.60.

The daily scratch off Saver increases by ten per cent to £4.40, while the weekly one rises to £22.

Some of the largest rises are the keycard daily Saver going up by more than 11 per cent to £3.90, and the annual Keycard Saver going up from £450 to £490.

Brighton Area Buswatch, representing local bus users, said there were ‘a few positives’.

“The centrefare and the bargain ‘Explorer Family’ remain unchanged (presumably as are student fares),” they said.

“The bus company has introduced a new ticket on smartphones (‘m’-ticket), which are priced roughly the same (or cheaper) than the pre-increased Keycard tickets.

“Also the bus company has introduced a pay monthly ticket, by direct debit.

“While more expensive than three monthly or annual tickets, it is cheaper than a monthly, and you will never need to renew your ticket again.”

Saver tickets would also be available on night buse,s bringing cheaper prices for customers travelling home late at night to Peacehaven, Newhaven, Seaford and Eastbourne (routes N12 and N14; Lewes, Ringmer and Uckfield (route N29).

Buswatch said ‘with recent hikes in the price of fuel it is inevitable some will be increased’.
