He recorded the fastest time in the London Marathon out of anyone in Sussex this year.
James Turner, 25, from Lewes, raced through the 26.2 mile course in just 2:32:13.
He was placed 78th out of the 38,000 runners taking part on Sunday April 26, in the largest marathon ever.
This was his first London Marathon though he had completed eight others including the Manchester event last year.
James trains with Brighton and Hove Athletics Club and put his improved performance down to the training of a new coach, Alison Benton.
James, who ran the marathon for fun and loves long distance running, said: “I’m currently studying Outdoor Education at the University of Cumbria but train in Brighton whenever I’m home.
“I also get plenty of Fell running in with the Ambleside Club in the Lake District and have completed a 50-mile ‘Ultra’ course over the hills. So I keep pretty fit.”
James served five years in the Army before leaving for university last September.
Tours of duty included one in Afghanistan, one in Oman and four years in Germany.
He said he was proud to have set the fastest time in Sussex for the London Marathon this year, but added he could improve his performance further.
