A Lewes student is to put her best foot forward and run her first ever half-marathon this weekend for a Parkinson’s charity which she describes as being ‘very close to her and her family’.

Megan Maltby, 20, from Lewes is running the South Coast Half Marathon on Sunday to raise money for the charity Parkinson’s UK and awareness of the condition.

It is estimated by the charity that 127,000 people in the UK have Parkinson’s including Megan’s grandma who was diagnosed with the condition almost seven years-ago at the age of 60.

Megan said: “Parkinson’s UK is charity very close to me as my grandma was diagnosed with it seven years-ago. There is not a cure yet. I am keen to not only raise money but awareness too.”

Parkinson’s UK offer support and funds research into finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological condition which can result in people find it taking longer to do things.

“I initially set-out to raise £500 for the charity but I have since beaten this, the more I can raise the more wonderful work the charity can do.” Megan said.

The Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, July 5 along Seaford seafront and Megan already has a goal in mind when it comes to her finishing time.

She said: “I’ll be thrilled if I am able to beat my aim which is to complete the half-marathon course in two hours and ten minutes.”

The former Priory School student is currently home from Canterbury where she is studying French and History at the University of Kent described her training as challenging.

Megan said: “Training turned out to be a great form of procrastination from studying for my exams but with the end of year partying I often found it hard to drag myself out of bed!”

Before undertaking a gruelling three month training plan the furthest Megan says she ran was five kilometres but after her training she is ready for the event on Sunday.

Megan added: “I excited about taking part, I am looking forward to the atmosphere of the half marathon and seeing my friends and family who are coming to watch and support me.”
