Five concerts to feature leading specialists

A SERIES of five concerts takes place this summer at Christ's Hospital school near Horsham, featuring some of Europe's leading specialist classical artists.

Part of the Woodhouse Recorder Week Summer School, the Horsham summer concerts run from August 1–5.

Kicking off the series on Sunday, August 1 at 7.30pm will be the Fontanella Recorder Quintet with a programme entitled From Mynstrell To Musytyan.

Series spokeswoman Annabel Knight said: "Fontanella Recorder Quintet explores the evolving title of the professional musician in Tudor courts and noble households, revealing the stories of the colourful characters behind the music.

A wonderful mix of music from popular folk song to high art consort music, featuring the group's magnificent family of Renaissance recorders and complemented by Tudor-inspired music from our own times."

The series continues Monday, August 2 at 8.30pm with Icelandic virtuoso Arngeir Hauksson (lutes, theorbo and guitar). Hauksson demonstrates a selection of some of history's finest music for lute and guitar from across the centuries.

Tuesday, August 3 at 8.30pm features Robin Bigwood (harpsichord and virginals).

"In a programme that's always fascinating, and often surprising, harpsichordist Robin Bigwood performs some of the most creative keyboard music from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th centuries, performed on beautiful modern copies of a French harpsichord from the 1660s, and Queen Elizabeth's Italian virginals from 1590."

Wednesday, August 4 at 7.30pm offers Dan Laurin and Anna Paradiso (recorder and piano). Annabel Knight and Robin Bigwood (recorder and piano) and The English Recorder.

"This international double-bill rediscovers the drama and beauty of the British recorder-piano repertoire since 1940, much of it commissioned by the remarkable 20th century virtuoso, Carl Dolmetsch. Classic original works by York Bowen, Walter Leigh, Robin Milford, Gordon Jacob and Cyril Scott combine angular, post-war economy of means with a compelling sense of intensity and romanticism. And in the true spirit of Dolmetsch, the programme includes a new commission by British composer Timothy Coker."

Finally, Thursday, August 5 at 1.30pm features Piers Adams and Howard Beach (recorder and harpsichchord) in a family concert of high-flying recorder music from seven centuries and several countries.

Tickets on 01306 627332 (8am-8pm).
