People wishing to learn to fly-fish can take part in a beginners’ day, led by qualified game angling instructors who will be on hand to give expert tuition on how to get started in the sport on May 4.

All the equipment needed will be provided on the day.

Any of the rainbow trout caught at the reservoir have to be taken away by the angler.

This year Arlington Reservoir Fly Fishing gift vouchers have been introduced, which can be used on the beginners’ days or by experienced fishermen who wish to fish on their own either from the bank or on a boat.

The 120 acre Arlington Reservoir site lies at the foot of the South Downs in Berwick and is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Fisheries and Recreation team leader Tom Todd said: “It is one of the finest rainbow trout fisheries in the South East and fishing is the only form of recreation allowed on the water.

“This fishing season, which runs until June 30, has had a slow start.

“Although the reservoir is full and well stocked with some 4,000 rainbow trout, the extended winter is providing both experienced and novice anglers with a challenging but interesting day’s fishing.

“People can either fish from the bank or from one of our boats which can be hired for the day.”

Your intrepid reporter took to the water for a taster session and was thoroughly taken with the sport which combines skill, know-how and patience.

Virtues which the seasoned anglers were able to call on to hook a bag full of rainbow trout. I on the other hand left empty handed, but happy with my day’s fishing, first from the bank and then from a small boat on the reservoir.

The cost for the Beginners’ Day is £15 per adult, £10 for juniors between 10 to 15-years-old; £20 for an adult and a junior.

For experienced anglers a day ticket for non-members starts at £20 for a two fish permit and £30 for an eight fish permit.
