The former youth mayor of Hailsham was given an award for her service to the community at a ceremony held last week.
Chelsie McIntosh, 17, was presented with the fifth annual John Britton award at the Hailsham Town Council offices.
John Britton was Hailsham and District Youth Leader from 1970 until 1987.
His wife Ruth and daughters Lorraine and Joanna decided to introduce the Youth Community Award four years ago to honour and remember his encouragement to teenagers to become involved with people in the community. As well as his desire to motivate youngsters through helping others.
During Chelsie’s term as Youth Mayor she helped with the development of Hailsham Youth Council. She also gave up her own time to participate in various community projects while assisting in organising the Friday Night Project activity scheme.
Chelsie was presented with a trophy inscribed with her name by Mrs Britton. She said she was delighted with the award.
Chelsie said: “Nowadays, there are many different activities going on in Hailsham for young people to get involved in. The fact that this award is being offered gives us a brilliant opportunity to recognise that young people do a lot of positive things with their lives and can work hard in the local community.
“During my one-year term as Youth Mayor I was made increasingly aware of the local issues facing the young people of Hailsham, enjoyed making a positive impact on the lives of my peers, and contributing to the new and exciting opportunities available to them.
“Receiving this prestigious award is a great honour and one I am extremely grateful for.”
Andy Joyes, Youth Project Coordinator at the town council, said Chelsie was an ‘inspiration’ to the community.
He said: “The award is a fitting way to celebrate John Britton’s achievements in former years.
“He was a talented and gifted individual who was an exemplary role model to the youth of Hailsham.
“This year’s award winner, Chelsie McIntosh, has been an inspiration for community spirit and motivation to young people in Hailsham and it is quite clear she deserves acknowledgement for all her volunteer work and everything else she has done to help others.
“Well done Chelsie.”
