Police addressing concerns about drug use and supply among young people in Lewes ran an operation in Mountfield Road on Thursday morning (November 12) to tackle the problem.

A drugs detection dog was deployed among Lewes neighbourhood policing team officers from 8am, checking for evidence of drug possession among those using the road.

Fourteen positive indications were made by the dog and those involved were searched away from public view.

PC Daran Goudie, who led the operation, said: “There has been concern about drugs in Lewes for some time and while we have been addressing the issue for the past few months, this was the most obvious visible policing operation so far connected with that work.

“While we did not make any seizures of drugs and there were no arrests, speaking to those we searched confirmed most were aware they had been in recent contact with a controlled substance.

“The searches were carried out discretely and I would like to thank all of those involved for their co-operation.

“We do take all reports of drug use and especially drug supply very seriously and any information that will assist us is very welcome.

“We may not react with an immediate physical presence, but all snippets of information help towards building the bigger picture and hopefully leading us to the key figures who are responsible for the supply of drugs to young adults and older children.

“If you have got something to tell us, please email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101. Your call will be treated in confidence, but if you prefer you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).”
