A FREE firework display is one of the highlights of Uckfield Bonfire Society’s carnival on Saturday, September 1. The carnival opens with a children’s parade leaving the Victoria Pleasure Ground at 1.30pm. Fancy dress competitions are in Holy Cross School field from 2pm (Civic Centre if wet.)

Later bonfire and carnival societies from around the county take part in a magical torchlight procession wending its way from Grange Road. Making music will be Uckfield Concert Brass, Heathfield Silver Band, Uckfield Scout Band and the Newhaven Youth Marching Band. Barry (Bazza) West from Uckfield – Rye’s Olympic torchbearer – will show off his torch to excited watchers. In the procession will be floats prepared by town groups including Guides, Rocks Park School and Cats’ Protection League. The firework display is from 9-9.30pm. Society secretary Carol Watts-Arnold urged people to dig into their pockets this year as every penny counts and all money is donated to deserving causes.
