WILDERNESS Wood, Hadlow Down is holding a free open day called a Future Forest Party this Sunday (October 23.) Everyone can go along and take part in a fun and action packed day for the family and enjoy some delicious food and drink.
With half-term starting, children can also enjoy learning firelighting skills, monster hunts, fairy gardens, Halloween creations and play castaways.
Autumn is being celebrated with a chestnut trail.
It aims to celebrate the delicious nuts that grow in the wood’s 2,000 year old coppice.
Visitors to the 62-acre award winning woodland can explore special chestnut woodland trails, enjoy chestnutty treats in the barn cafe and even try their hand at chestnut forestry at a coppice skills workshop.
A trail has been created through the parts of the wood with the best chestnuts.
Along the one mile route visitors can read information boards about the sweet chestnut woodlands, timber and the nuts themselves – and of course take some nuts home to roast.
For younger children there’s a chestnut discovery trail giving young explorers the chance to discover the history of sweet chestnut trees as well as find out how and why the trees are grown here and what the wood can be used for.
