Staff from The Garden Bar, at Sovereign Harbour, were just a handful of the people taking part in the Sussex 100 cycle ride, raising £35,000 for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice.

More than 300 people gave up their Sunday-morning lie-in on October 12 to take part in the inaugural challenging bike ride across the Sussex countryside.

The 100km and 60km rides set off at 7.45am and most riders returned at around 11am.

Event Organiser Kerry O’Neill said, “We have had a brilliant turnout and a fantastic fundraising total. We need £6,850 each day to provide all our care services, both at the hospice and out in the community in families’ own homes, so the amount raised is the equivalent of five days of care and will make a real difference to local life-limited children and families.

“The success of the event would not have been possible without the help of the many volunteers who registered the riders, handed out medals and ensured the route was properly signposted. We are already making plans to build on the success of this year’s event and get even more people to take to the roads of Sussex on their bikes.”
