Preparations are underway for a fun packed family sports challenge which will take place in Denton on Saturday June 7.

The Denton Community Challenge is designed for all ages and also includes displays, raffles and a home made cake competition.

The event is themed around the World Cup taking place in Brazil and will be held in the Avis Road field opposite Tate’s garage from 1-5pm.

Denton Community Challenge committee member Amanda Wilkins said: “This is a really fun event for the whole family as there is something for everyone.

“From pony rides to a railway ride, dog display to drummers plus the addition of the Craft Fair, you won’t find a better free event anywhere.

“As last year’s winner of the inaugural Community Games Shining Light Award I am absolutely delighted this year’s award has gone to our hard working chairman (Cliff Dargonne) - no one deserves it more.”

Children will be able to win rosettes by taking part in sporting challenges and there will be a climbing wall, pony rides, bale throwing and a steam train.

A free craft fair will be held in the Community Hall adjacent to the field.

There will also be a cake competition. Contestants should bring homemade cakes to the Community Hall before noon so they can be judged by Norman Baker MP.

Raffle prizes include an iPod, a signed Brighton and Hove Albion football shirt and a cricket bat signed by Sussex County Cricket Club First XI.

The MC for the day will be local DJ Keith Johnson.

There will also be a tug of war, a display from Norcross Dancing and cadets drill, as well as Up Tempo Dancers, dog obedience demonstration and Scrivens Martial Arts Challenge.

Money raised from the day will go to three local charities: the James Daniels Memorial Trust, Friends and Associates of Denton School and St Leonard’s Church.
