Eighteen-year-old Gillian Hocking, from Newick, scored the highest mark in the country for her Cambridge Pre-U Certificate in Global Perspectives and Independent Research this summer.

The former Central Sussex College student studied for the Pre-U qualification alongside her A Levels at the college’s Sixth Form Haywards Heath.

In addition to her outstanding result in the Cambridge exam, she also achieved A*s in English Literature and Economics, and an A in Spanish, and has now taken up a place to read Law and LLB at Queen Mary University, part of the University of London, with ambitions to pursue a career in commercial law.

Michael O’Sullivan, Chief Executive, University of Cambridge International Examinations, said: “I am delighted to congratulate Gillian Hocking on this outstanding achievement. Topping the list of excellent candidates in a Cambridge Pre-U subject is a performance of the very highest calibre. Gillian has shown us truly outstanding ability. I hope she can not only draw great satisfaction and pride from this, but also take inspiration from it in setting goals in the future.”

Gillian’s success comes hot on the heels of another former Central Sussex College student, Jacqueline Agate, who scored the highest mark in the 2011 Pre-U exam.
