A youth cafe in Hailsham has been officially re-opened after it was redecorated by youngsters.
Hailsham Town Mayor, Cllr Jo Bentley ,was on hand to officially unveil the newly revamped Square Youth Cafe in Market Square.
She cut the ribbon in front of a crowd of young people, youth workers and youth organisation representatives.
The interior of the venue for young people in Hailsham has been repainted by a group of 16 to 17 year olds.
The group took part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for young people organised throughout the summer to work on new skills and get involved in the community.
Cllr Bentley said the redecoration work had transformed the building.
She said: “We are very grateful for all the hard work put into improving The Square by those working on the NCS scheme, for the benefit of young people in Hailsham.
“The redecoration work has transformed the building and we are very impressed with the finished product.”
The youth cafe is funded and managed by the town council.
Town Clerk John Harrison said the improvement indicated the town’s commitment to youth services.
He said: “It is great to have received support from the NCS.
“Redecorating The Square is a perfect example that indicates the commitment of youth organisations to the future of youth facilities in the area, helping to enhance the services and facilities centre offers to younger members of the community.”
The Square Youth Café is free to enter for anyone between the ages of 11 and 17.
Its afternoon opening times for Years 7 to 9 are 3.15pm until 5pm, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Its evening opening times for Year 8+ run from 7.15pm until 9.30pm Monday to Friday.
The NCS is a programme of activities and challenges for 16 and 17 year olds that will support them to develop skills and attitudes they need to become more engaged with their communities and become active and responsible citizens. Around 30,000 people get involved with the NCS each year across the country.
