TWO FRIENDS who work for a Halland garden centre are cycling more than 1,000 miles for charity. Michael Cottingham (17) from Halland and Tom Hart (18) from Crowborough both work for the Staverton Nursery. The pair will take part in the Lands End to John o’ Groats bike ride for Smile Train which helps pay for operations for more than 165,000 children born in the world a year with cleft palates.

Michael said: “I was born with a cleft lip which was repaired at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead when I was six weeks old. We hope to raise £5,000 and so far have had more than £700 in sponsorship.”

Tom added: “We’re working hard on our fitness with runs and longer cycle rides. The ride starts on August 6 and takes about two weeks. We’re staying in Youth Hostels and will head through Cornwall and Devon, up along the Welsh borders then into the Lake District and Scotland. It’s pretty demanding.” To sponsor Michael and Tom go to the nursery or visit: www.smiletrainlorg.uk/goto/endtoend
