A comfortable win for our first team over at Lewes in the Mid-Sussex League, by 4½ to ½. Wins for Francis Rayner, Bernard Cafferty, Howard Tebbs and John Sugden, with a draw for Jerry Anstead.
Unfortunately our fourths, newly promoted to division 3, risk a fast return even though the captain has largely drawn on a pool of stronger players than the squad that earned promotion. A 3½-1½ home defeat by Uckfield firsts doesn’t help: a win from Daniel Lowe, a draw from Steve Blewitt, but losses from Derek Cosens, Mason Woodhams and Robert Smart.
Early results in the Club Championship point to an eventual victory for John Sugden, already on +4. (Champion Francis Rayner has chosen not to defend his title). In division 2 (the Pelton Cup) Keith Hossack and Adrian Cload are early leaders on +3, with Robert Smart close behind on +2. In division 3 (the Rush Cup) Steve Oakman and Alfred Mikurenda lead with +2.
Fixtures at the Chess Club in Cornwallis Terrace next week: Tuesday, December 9, 7.30pm, Mid-Sussex League division 3, Hastings & St Leonards IV versus Haywards Heath II.
