The First Heathfield Scout Group in partnership is delighted to announce that the Scout Group will be Sainsbury’s partner charity for the forthcoming year.

Families and Scouts were delighted that the Group was shortlisted after parents submitted ballots in store. They were even more thrilled to be chosen after a presentation was made to the store’s colleagues’ committee.

Group Scout Leader Jackie Parker said: “This partnership is an excellent opportunity to work together with Sainsbury’s to raise funds for our new Headquarters on the current land we have at Ghyll Road. The Group is currently hiring the facilities at All Saints and St Richards School in old Heathfield but we are all fundraising for a permanent building.

“With all our Explorers, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Leaders and families, together with all the Sainsbury’s staff, we will be a powerful and visible partnership and we look forward to an exciting year of fundraising events.”

The First Heathfield has been a Scout group since 1909, two years after Baden Powell founded the Scout Movement. The current group has 94 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and shares its Explorer section with Broad Oak and Punnetts Town. Together with the dedicated support of a team of leaders, assistants and helpers they are at the centre of the community.

Since the current group was registered in 1945 it is estimated more than 1,000 people have experienced Scouting through the group, many of whom still live and work in the area.

This is a double celebration for the Group with a high number of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts successfully achieving their Chief Scout awards. The highest awards attainable in each section.

The proposal for the new Scout HQ is to reinstate a new home for Scouting within Heathfield and Waldron to meet future needs of children and leaders. The site is in a wooded valley next to Geers Wood and a new single-storey building would be timber-framed with lime render straw bale walls, double glazed windows and a dual pitch green roof.

It will also have photovoltaic panels, low energy lighting, ground source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting with an entrance lobby, hall, kitchen, office, activity room and storage area as well as toilets.
