Herstmonceux’s first Christmas market was held on Saturday (December 6).
The Spirit of Christmas was organised by the newly formed Herstmonceux Business Association (HBA) and saw a variety of stalls complete with carol singing by the Herstmonceux Castle Choir and the HBA choir.
Father Christmas made his grand entrance on a horse drawn sleigh. Domino, a 23-year-old new forest pony wore reindeer antlers for the special occasion.
Crowds gathered to welcome both into the village with eager children lined the streets to see Father Christmas before the village was lit up with its sparkling Christmas lights.
Caroline Davenport Thomas, owner of Davenports Delicatessen and HBA chairman, said: “We are thrilled and thank everyone for their support, and the turn out we’ve received from the local community for this event. We had obtained a grant from Herstmonceux Parish Council and contributions from local businesses to be able to purchase new Christmas lights and Christmas trees throughout the village, giving the village a new dimension and feel for this time of year. The Spirit of Christmas was a lovely finish to 2013’s local produce markets which are held on the first Saturday of every month and we will be back again on February 1 2014 from 9am until 12.”
The HBA said it would like to thank all those who have supported it so far and said it looked forward to bringing new ideas to the village and surrounding areas next year.
