Following a successful fundraising campaign, the newly-restored Number Five bell at St Mary’s, in Ringmer, is to be returned next Thursday (August 6).
The bell was removed in June to enable a small crack to be repaired and the bell to be retuned.
The band of bellringers set about raising the required £12,000 to fund the removal, repair and reinstallation with a series of events, and the total was reached thanks to generous donations from individuals and trusts far and wide.
The bell will be returned to the church on Thursday morning, when it will be blessed by Ringmer’s new vicar, the Revd Beth Woodgate, before being hoisted on high to enter the tower through the louvres at the top.
Around 30 people witnessed the removal of the bell on a glorious afternoon in June (the last time the bells were removed was in 1965) and more are expected to watch the return, which will take most of the day.
