CHECK MATE! Pupils at this Uckfield school have certainly been making the right moves after their school was given chess academy school status.
Holy Cross School in Uckfield was awarded the status by Sussex Junior Chess.
They join just three other schools who have been given the title.
Brian Stockham has been the lead coach at Holy Cross School for over fifteen years and is now the Sussex Junior Chess Academy Director for Uckfield and the surrounding area. He said: “Holy Cross has had a tremendous record at chess, winning ten county titles at different ages and this year alone has had seven youngsters selected to play for Sussex, with four of them winning medals at national championships. This honour from Sussex Junior Chess is much appreciated and indicates much about the excellence of the school.
There are many activities planned throughout the year to encourage children to rest from interacting with machines and screens and learn to engage peacefully with another child face-to-face in this great brain game.”
Dr John Higgs, secretary of Sussex Junior Chess said, “The Chess Academy is a fantastic opportunity for school children in Sussex to learn in a fun and safe environment. Fun, innovative and age appropriate coaching based on the fundamentals with mini tournaments and possible specialist sessions for older pupils.
“As we know playing chess helps develop powers of analysis, logic and reason, as well as encouraging powers of concentration and self-discipline. This approach makes it attractive to schools to participate.” More information at www.sussexjuniorchess.org
