A new street market in Hailsham, designed to help revitalise the town centre, is to open this month.

More than 20 stalls will set up shop in Vicarage Field on August 24 selling a range of local produce, fruits, vegetables, clothing and accessories.

The market is one of the projects Hailsham Forward is working on to help improve the image of Hailsham and attract more shoppers into town.

Hailsham Forward was set up after a grant of £10,000 was given to Hailsham by the government as part of the Mary Portas town regeneration scheme.

It is hoped the market will improve retail opportunities in Hailsham, increase footfall and spend in the town centre.

The market, which will also sell handbags, pet supplies, jewellery, natural beauty products, gifts, vinegars and oils, will run between 9.30am and 3pm.

It will be in Vicarage Fields on the third Saturday and second and fourth Thursday of every month until December 21.

The market will then be reviewed before opening again in March 2014.

Mickey Caira, Hailsham Town Council’s Business Enterprise Manager, said: “Being a market town in its own right, and following important feedback given by the public in recent months, we felt that a regular street market in the town centre was something Hailsham needed as part of its regeneration.

“Hailsham used to have a street market and there has been a lot of enthusiasm to get one up and running again.

“We are confident that the market will attract customers from neighbouring towns and villages into the bargain.”

The days for the market were chosen to avoid other local markets and help complement the markets already available in Hailsham.

The market traders will include a number of local producers already selling in other local markets, including the Hailsham Farmers’ Market which takes place on a monthly basis.

Hailsham Forward chairman Paul Soane said: “By supporting local producers, growers, suppliers and offering them the opportunity to sell locally - markets are an ideal way of showcasing the diverse range of products available in Hailshamand I’d encourage people to come down to Vicarage Field and support independent trade.”

The Hailsham Forward team is working on a number of projects in partnership with the town council and local Chamber of Commerce to help revitalise the town centre. For more information visit http://www.hailshamforward.co.uk/
