A dream has come true for sports fans in Uckfield thanks to the outcome of a bid to the Football Foundation.

The All Weather Pitch for Uckfield (AWP4U) group has just been awarded a grant of £203,646. This, along with confirmed funding from Sport England, Uckfield Town Council, Uckfield Community College, East Sussex County Council, Uckfield Grasshoppers Football Club, Friday Media Trust, Uckfield Rugby Club and Uckfield Lions means that this project will now go ahead. The long awaited, new 3G All Weather Pitch will be built on land in Uckfield Community Technology College grounds.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I commend AWP4U and Sussex FA for working tirelessly to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future. This year is an exciting time for sport in this country and a tremendous opportunity to create a grassroots legacy. The Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity with funding provided from the Premier League, the FA and the Government. It is dedicated to raising the standard of grassroots community sports facilities and to getting more people actively playing this national sport.”

Jeremy Hallett, from Uckfield Town Council is very pleased that, at last, Uckfield will have a facility the town can be truly proud of.

Hugh Hennebry, Principal of Uckfield Community College said, “The whole community have come together to create a lasting legacy to commemorate the 2012 Olympics; Uckfield will have a world class facility. It is so uplifting to see such a positive response from everybody.”

County Councillor, Paul Sparks, commented, “East Sussex are delighted to be marking London 2012 in this way. It will support sport for all for generations to come.”

Gordon Buckland from the town’s Grasshoppers youth football team is equally delighted, “This will enable wider community involvement in football and also be a fantastic facility to nurture future talent.”

Work should commence before Christmas and the aim is to have the project finished by Easter. The project is still short of the total required and fundraising efforts are still going on through Uckfield FM, Friday Media and the College.
