A Hastings resident with a rare form of cancer is planning a sponsored tandem parachute jump to raise funds for a charitable organisation that has supported her through her battle with the disease.
Karen Avery, 51, married, with adult children and grand children, describes herself as “just a regular 50 something woman”.
Two years ago, during a routine blood test, a problem with her Liver functions was discovered. After a scan and further tests Karen received devastating news. She had cancer and the Liver growths, being secondary metastases (growths on a second site) meant that her outlook wasn’t as good as it might have been. “After failing to detect the Primary site I had a Liver biopsy which showed that my tumours were Neuroendocrine,” she said.
“When I next went to see the consultant and asked what that meant to my life expectancy I was told that my particular cancer was rare and very unique and individual in its behaviour.”
Karen was referred to a Liver Consultant at Kings College Hospital who specialises in Neuroendocrine Tumours (NET’s).
“Fortunately this cancer, was on the whole not a nasty, aggressive cancer that was likely to ‘finish me off’ any time soon, she said.
“I was told that a large percentage of NET patients can live for 10-20 years although will need treatment for associated problems.”
Next week is the 2nd anniversary of Karen’s diagnosis and she says she is currently able to live a good life. “Part of my positive outlook is having good nurses, doctors and consultants. NPF (Net Patient Foundation) also plays a large part by being the only UK based organisation supporting all NET cancers. This help and support is what made me think about the sponsored tandem parachute jump to say ‘thank you’ to them.”
Karen along with seven friends and supporters will do the jump at Hinton Airfield, Brackley, on August 27. All are raising money for NPF, Karen added: “So if anyone can find a few pounds that they could spare we would be very grateful.”
