Kayaker found dead on Isle of Wight was in Newhaven

Police on the Isle of Wight are trying to identify the body of a kayaker who was last known to have been seen alive in Newhaven.

The man was found in a kayak on Yaverland Beach, Sandown around 7.20pm on Friday (September 11).

He was seen in Brighton Canoes in Newhaven around 4pm three days earlier on Tuesday, September 8 and police are now trying to establish where he was and what he was doing during those three days.

The man was white, believed to have spoken with an Irish accent, aged mid-20s to mid-30s, with blue eyes, dark hair, nice teeth and described as ‘well built’. He was wearing beige shorts and a blue zip-up jacket.

His kayak was an inflatable yellow and black Sevylor.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to try to establish the circumstances.
