A dustcart driver from Ringmer is taking on a huge challenge this summer to raise vital funds for charity.
Father of two Kevin Miller is heading to the Lake District in June to scale 24 peaks in 24 hours in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The 46-year-old’s brother died of the life-threatening inherited disease.
Kevin, who lives in Foxglove Close, Ringmer, with his wife Kate and children Jade, 15, and James, 13, hopes to raise £2,400 to fund research into the condition, £100 for every peak he completes.
He said: “Three years ago I was 17 stone and had never done anything sporty. Then I won the dads’ race at my children’s sports day. The kids thought it was just luck so I set out to prove them wrong.
“Since then I’ve done two full marathons as well as lots of other events and now I’m ready for this new challenge. The children don’t laugh any more and they are proud of me which feels brilliant.”
Kevin continued: “My brother Michael died when he was just 19 years old from cystic fibrosis (CF). I also had another brother Keith who died at just six weeks old before I was born.
“Thankfully people with CF are living longer these days but I want to do all I can to raise money towards better treatments for CF so that other families don’t have to go through the pain of losing their loved ones.”
Kevin, who works for Lewes District Council, has already raised more than £900 – including £500 at a whip round at the Waste and Recycling Department’s Christmas drinks party.
The money he raises will help fund research into treating and curing CF.
It will also help provide support, advice and appropriate clinical care to more than 9,300 babies, children and young adults living with Cystic Fibrosis in the UK. You can sponsor Kevin at www.justgiving.com/kevin-miller-cf-24-peaks
Elsewhere, local builders merchant Chandlers Building Supplies has launched a charity challenge aimed at raising a huge £50,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. It is in honour of employee Rob Sadler, a CF sufferer himself, who has raised thousands of pounds for the charity over the years and is thrilled that Chandlers has pledged its support.
