A care home has been placed in special measures after being rated ‘inadequate’ by health inspectors.

York Lodge Care Home has been rated ‘inadequate’ for safety, effectiveness, leadership and responsiveness and ‘requires improvement’ for being caring, by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The report said: “People were not protected from the risk of the spread of infection with laundry in shared bathrooms and décor and furnishings that made effective cleaning difficult.”

On both inspection days in July, inspectors from the CQC observed ‘soiled laundry’ was left stored and exposed in rooms.

Inspectors found staff did not have the necessary skills to look after people adding that residents were not supported during meal times.

The report said: “The service was not consistently caring. People were not consistently treated with dignity and respect.

“Staff were sometimes task-orientated and did not show kindness or compassion in their approach.

“The service was not consistently well led.”

Inspectors said the premises and equipment did not meet the demands of people and maintenance issues ‘impacted people’s wellbeing’.

The report also said people with mobility difficulties were at risk of becoming ‘socially isolated’ with little activity to stimulate or interest them.

However, relatives felt the home was well run and were confident they could raise concerns with staff and managers.

The care home will be inspected again in six months and kept under review.
