Uckfield Rotary Club staged a special dinner and presentation evening to thank everyone involved in the Kit Car Grand Prix held during the Uckfield Festival in July.
Members heard how the committee - headed by Rory O’Connor - works flat out throughout the year to stage the event. Rory is both a Rotarian and a teacher at UCTC and helps cement an essential link between the Club and the college.
The committee also comprises Colin Cornford, Chris Gauntlet, Paul Gibson, Paul Page-Mitchell and Charles Stringer who are already working on the 2014 GP.
Rotary first started the event using pedal cars, but co-operation with UCTC saw the introduction of electric cars, supplied in kit form to primary schools. The pupils build them with support from the organising committee. .
Rotarians staff the event on the day, acting as pit marshals etc. They also sell ice-creams. Members heard the 2013 event was held on a very hot day, so more ice cream was sold than had been anticipated with extra supplies collected by Inner Wheel members Anne Nicholls, Rosemary Toovey and Yvonne Linthwaite, raising £500.
Also present were Ann Press and Joan Stocker, chairman and treasurer of the local Macmillan Cancer support group, who were presented with a cheque for £827.45, proceeds from the cookery demonstration held in April and the Party in the Park in June.
