A Topping Out ceremony has been held to celebrate the newly-built Newhaven Community Fire Station.
The new development, called Saxon House, is part of an exciting integrated joint project with both Sussex Police and Lewes District Council, aimed at delivering a wide range of public services to residents in the Newhaven area.
This traditional ceremony marks the last beam being placed on top of the structure, with the project expected to be completed in November.
Work got underway on this project, in Meeching Road, in October last year to replace the fire station in Fort Road and to support the council and police with future plans.
This collaboration is a ground-breaking approach to emergency services. Chairman for East Sussex Fire Authority, Councillor Phil Howson, said: “This project illustrates working together and sharing facilities at its best, resulting in significant long-term savings for each organisation, and ultimately the taxpayer, in terms of build and future running costs.
“East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is looking forward to working with partners and delivering the finest facilities and co-ordinated public services for Newhaven residents, in the centre of town.”
Chief Inspector Rob Leet, Lewes District’s police commander, said: “I am very pleased to see this new shared premises taking shape. The community hub will give us an excellent opportunity to work much more closely with colleagues from the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Lewes District Council.
“There is no better way of working then being able to speak with partners face-to-face, on a daily basis, sharing information and tackling shared problems in unison.
“This will inevitably lead to a better service for the public - not only in reducing costs to the public purse but also in the provision of a holistic approach to solving issues where appropriate.”
Councillor Rob Blackman, Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “Completion of the Newhaven community fire station will provide a new multi-agency presence in the centre of Newhaven that will deliver better access to public services for many local people. When this new facility opens it will provide a significant focal point for public services in Newhaven and contribute to the regeneration of the town”.
