LETTER: Response is pathetic

The response of East Sussex County Council to the petition seeking improvements at Exceat Bridge is simply pathetic.

By telling us only now that they are looking at building a new bridge north of the present one, they are simply putting off a solution to a problem that has been there for years until a completely unknown date in the future.

That assumes that money becomes available and that the inevitable objections from the South Downs National Park authority and others can be overcome.

In the meantime the hold ups at busy periods, which can sometimes stretch half way to East Dean, continue.

It may be true that much of the traffic from Monday to Friday is local, but even for them the delays in the morning and evening can be substantial.

Add to that all the tourist traffic, which has certainly increased in response to the creation of the National Park and we are where we are now, with no plans by the county council for any immediate solution.

Their notion that improvements would attract traffic which they would prefer to use the A27 does nothing at all for local residents.

For those outside the area, the A27 would stand more chance of being used as they wish if it had already been turned into a dual carriageway, instead of being allowed to remain the dangerous road which it is now.

The installation of traffic lights would immediately remove the problem of drivers ignoring the priority signs, which they often do.

Some of that can be excused by the difficulty for westbound drivers waiting to cross not being able to see the eastbound traffic among the greenery close to the bridge, and might be relieved by cutting those bushes, etc, down, but the installation of traffic lights, regardless of problems for the Cuckmere Tavern, is the only available solution.

The sooner the county council gets on with it the better.
