MP should stop interfering in vote for new Lewes District leader

I was appalled to learn that Norman Baker MP has attempted to put inappropriate pressure on Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe with regard to her voting intentions when Lewes District Council selects a new leader.

Councillor O’Keeffe is an independent and highly respected representative of the people. She has brought great dignity to the mayoralty of Lewes and does not have the benefit of a party political machine behind her.

Being of independent mind Ms O’Keeffe is entitled to make her own decision in her own time right up to the moment she votes.

She will cast that vote in what she sees as the best interests of her constituents who regularly return her to office with substantial majorities.

Mr Baker’s function is to represent people at Westminster and not to interfere with the work of local independent councillors in the manner he has.

To the best of my knowledge and belief neither the Conservatives nor UKIP have attempted to browbeat Councillor O’Keeffe in the way Mr Baker has done.

If the MP for Lewes wishes to redeem his credibility, then I suggest he should apologise to Ms O’Keeffe. I am not, however, holding my breath.
