Lewes council boss Jenny Rowlands is to step down next year due to job cuts.

The chief executive and her counterpart at Eastbourne Borough Council Rob Cottrill had both been told their roles would be scrapped and a new shared chief executive role created.

It came about after both cabinet committees at Eastbourne Borough Council and Lewes District Council agreed to share services across the councils because of continuing government cuts and the need to meet financial challenges ahead.

Both chief executives were told they would have to apply for the one role.

It has been announced today that after consultation, Ms Rowlands will not be applying for the new role and Mr Cottrill is set to be appointed.

Leaders of both councils David Tutt at Eastbourne and Andy Smith at Lewes said in a joint statement, “We have been formally consulting with both chief executives about the deletion of their existing roles and the creation of a new shared chief executive role.

“The result of this consultation is that Jenny confirmed she would not be applying for the new role.

“An Eastbourne Borough Council recruitment panel and a Lewes District Council appointments panel met last week with councillors and both panels unanimously voted in favour of the appointment of Robert as the shared chief executive and head of paid service.

“The power to approve the appointment sits exclusively with Full Council, and so extraordinary Full Council meetings have been set up for Wednesday January 13 at Eastbourne and Thursday January 14 at Lewes to ratify the recommendation to appoint Robert.

“We know Jenny and Robert will do their utmost to ensure the minimum disruption to staff whilst these changes are taking place, and to ensure that both organisations are in the strongest possible position to start the transformation.”

Earlier this year both councils agreed to adopt a strategy for the integration of services across the councils.
