A Southern water spokesman said: “Yesterday we completed our repairs to the collapsed sewer in Station Street, Lewes and today we are resurfacing the road.

“During a CCTV survey of the sewer, a bed sheet was found. This is thought to have contributed to the problem.

“The road remains closed and diversions are in place. The road will reopen once engineers have completed the necessary safety checks.

“Thank you for your patience and apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
