A cash injection of £270,000 is set to address youth unemployment in the town and surrounding villages.
A £150,000 grant comes from East Sussex County Council’s Economic Regeneration Fund to help Hailsham Works! – a community project set up by employment charity Tomorrow’s People in partnership with Hailsham Town Council.
The Town Council has committed £120,000 over three years towards the project and to provide accommodation.
Town Council members unanimously agreed last August to support the development of the project aimed at tackling youth unemployment.
The project’s emphasis will be to ensure businesses support the project through training opportunities, mentoring schemes and support to work towards a successful and meaningful employment, along with training experience for young people.
The Town Council has proposed that a youth partnership between the Town Council and other interested organisations, including Hailsham Youth Council, local businesses and Sussex Police, will also be established in the near future.
Oversight councillor for Youth Projects at Hailsham Town Council, Michael Ryan, said: “This is fantastic news for each and everyone concerned, and of course we welcome any financial support to boost the opportunities for the young people of our town. Youth unemployment is a significant issue in Hailsham.”
