The deadline to make your views count on the proposal to close Seaford tip is on Wednesday December 11.
East Sussex County Council is proposing to close three tips in the county as part of its Waste Strategy Review consultation, including one in Seaford.
About 8,700 people have signed an online and paper petition which calls for the county council to reconsider closing the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Cradle Hill Road.
Because more than 5,000 people have signed the petition, the issue will have to be debated by full council, as opposed to the county council’s cabinet. Campaigners hope this will give them a better chance of winning.
Seaford councillor Sam Adeniji, who is a member of Lewes District Council, presented the petition to the county council chairman on Monday December 9 with cllr Carolyn Lambert
A group from Seaford went along to show support and to stage a mini demonstration outside the County Council Offices.
The county council has said it needs to make at least £60m of savings over the next three years and stressed it was being forced to make some very tough decisions,
It said the net savings from closing the three tips would be £200,000 per year.
