Elizabeth Chatfield beat the nation's best at cake decorating.

A CAKE baker and decorator took on the nation’s best to be crowned winner of the first ever Cake & Bake Show in front of professionals from all over the country.

Liz Chatfield, owner of Sylvia’s Kitchen in Hailsham, entered a live professionals cake decorating competition at a big media covered event at Earls Court, London on Sunday, September 23, attended by Paul Hollywood, Mary Berry and other baking professionals.

Chosen entrants including Mrs Chatfield went head to head in a competition to decorate a dummy cake within an hour.

Each contestant was given the theme, ‘In the Rose Garden’ and had just half an hour to plan the cake design before getting on with the cake art work.

Liz Chatfield said: “We were supplied with limited identical tools, ingredients and decorations to cover and decorate an eight inch dummycake within the hour in front of our show audience.”

She added: “We were interviewed whilst working too. I managed to cut my thumb in the process, so it was quite a lot of pressure.

“We then went head to head, unable to view each other’s work, to transform our dummy cake into our chosen creation.”

The finished cakes were judged by the winner of Wedding TV’s The Great Cake Bake, Elizabeth Solaru and Mrs Chatfield was awarded with a Cake Decorating Challenge Professional Category Winner Certificate, and a pair of tickets to next year’s Cake and Bake Show in Manchester, in April, including overnight accommodation for two.

Mrs Chatfield’s cake decorating business was borne from her childhood interest in sugarcraft and specialist making.

As a girl, she used to watch her mum Sylvia creating amazing wedding cakes in her farmhouse kitchen.

Sylvia taught her daughter all she knew about cake decorating and her interest grew and grew.

Mrs Chatfield eventually took a couse in sugarcraft and began producing her own wedding cakes – and then she developed her own popular business.
