A walk round Hailsham’s history
Residents and visitors to Hailsham can learn more about the town’s heritage and historical significance by walking the Hailsham Heritage Trail.
Hailsham In Bloom, which works in partnership with local residents, schools, businesses and voluntary organisations to provide long-term improvements to the environmental quality of the town, originally proposed to create a designated heritage trail in 2010.
With resident Paul Endersby, principal writer of the Hailsham Heritage Trail guide, a number of buildings and other locations of interest which are considered to be of historical importance were identified, the majority of which have been included in the Trail,launched last year.
Copies of the Hailsham Heritage Map & Guide are now available to by for £2 at the Town Council offices in Market Street.
The guide includes historical photos and a description of each of the 27 buildings and locations of interest that make up the Hailsham Heritage Trail, and the map itself directs people around the town centre and its outskirts visiting such sites as St Mary’s Parish Church, Hailsham Livestock Market, Cortlandt, the Common Pond and the Old Railway Station.
Hailsham In Bloom Chairman Councillor Richard Grocock said the walk “offers an excellent insight into the town’s rich and eventful history, and enriches the value of the town for visitors.”
He said: “I am delighted to have been involved with the development of the Hailsham Heritage Trail from the very beginning.
“The guide serves as a key resource for visitors, and complements the numerous larger publications and attraction brochures that are already distributed through the Town Council offices and local visitor centres.”
Added Councillor Grocock: “Hailsham is a wonderful town, and I hope the Heritage Trail will continue to be enjoyed and well-used by people in years to come.”
