An ‘Amazing’ response to new military social group

A SOCIAL network set up by an ex-soldier for the benefit of ex-armed forces personnel has gathered interest following a new story published by the Sussex Express.
Ben Mead, aged 32, who has connections to Hailsham, created ‘Military Roots: Ex-Military Wicked Sense of Humour’ to support people who served recently in any of the armed forces and have now become ‘civvies’.
He believes that ex-armed forces folk have a distinct sense of humour due to their experiences and there is a need to socially interact with each other.
Mr Mead said: “The Sussex Express article [September 7] has been totally amazing in the replies I’m getting for membership and sponsors.”
Military Roots is for anyone who has served in the military to meet once per month for a social event such as a beer and a chat.
You do not need conflict experience - just to have served in the British Armed Forces such as the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. The network is a way of making new friends in the Wealden and Eastbourne area, and understanding that you not alone.
Mr Mead added: “There are many different local military associations but the number of World War two veterans is becoming less.
“So some of the military associations are closing down within the local to lack of numbers.
“After some research, I found out that the ex-services personnel are leaving the Military and aren’t joining their local military associations as they feel they are too young or because there no one in that association who can understand what they been though in one of the conflicts of the recent day.”
The first meeting takes place from 7pm/7.30pm at Royal Naval & Social Club, Beach Road, Eastbourne BN22 7EU, this Wednesday, September 26.
It will be an informal meeting with no guest speaker or need to wear military ties.
There is parking along Beach Road and the surrounding roads.
Anyone interested in attending the first meeting of ‘Military Roots’ needs to confirm in advance by contacting Ben Mead by email: exmilwsoh@gmail.com
