Anger over dumped rabbits
HORRIFIED members of the public contacted East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service on Wednesday after spotting dozens of dumped dead rabbits on the side of the A26 just north of South Heighton, near Newhaven
Rescuer Trevor Weeks immediately visited the spot and discovered at least 47 dead rabbits laying in the roadside.
'Some had blood in their ears; others had wounds on their heads and bodies. It's sick and not something which you would want schoolchildren to see,' he said.
'We took two of the bodies to the vet to find out how they were killed and X-rays show they have air gun pellets in them.
'As far as we know it is illegal to dump dead animals on the roadside. What a sad waste of life.'
He said the rabbits had probably been dumped within the past 24 hours.
The local authority was due on Wednesday to have them removed.
Added Mr Weeks: 'It's hardly pest control. It's just cruelty in the name of sport. The clubbed ones obviously did not die from the pellets.'
