Anglo French musicians to perform at Uckfield concert

Musicians from Dieppe and Uckfield will get together on Saturday October 27 for a joint concert organised by the Uckfield and District Twinning Association. The concert will feature English music from the time of Elizabeth I so it is most appropriate that it will be held in the atmospheric setting of St Thomas a Becket Church in Framfield.

The French musicians are teachers and students from a specialist music school in Dieppe. As a result of Uckfield’s recent twinning with Arques-la-Bataille, near Dieppe, Twinning members started to form links with teachers from the Dieppe school- the St Saens Conservatoire.

This spring teachers and students from the conservatoire prepared a concert of English music from the time of Elizabeth I in honour of our own Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. So members of the Twinning Association were delighted and honoured, that at the end of October the group, Elizabeth’s Consort, will travel to Sussex to perform the concert in England.

They will be joined by some of the brightest young musicians from Uckfield Community College.

Benoit Toigo, a teacher at the Conservatoire and leader of the French group, has emailed his Uckfield counterparts to say that the French group is very excited about the visit. He went on: “It’s amazing and everybody is really looking forward to coming!” He hopes that the concert will be the start of long-term links between music groups in Dieppe and East Sussex.

Members of the Twinning Association will accommodate visitors during their weekend stay.

The concert will be at 6pm in the church at Framfield, by courtesy of Rev Chris Lawrence. Admission is free. After the concert the French musicians will attend a special gala event as part of the Brighton Early Music Festival.

The Arques-la-Bataille twinning was formalised last year when a charter was signed between the two towns. Since then there has been a lively exchange with visits in both directions across the Channel. A highlight last year was the international youth camp in Malchow, Germany.

The Association’s first twinning venture was with Quickborn near Hamburg in North Germany. David added: “This friendship has been running for about 20 years now. It has always proved a great success, and we were delighted to sign up with Arques and extend our contacts within France as well as Germany. The Deputy Mayor of Quickborn visited Uckfield this summer to come to the Festival and the Carnival last month.”
