Last week 60 lucky pupils from Bonners CofE School in Maresfield were treated to a day of professional storytelling.
Bonners hosted special sessions where classes in years one and two let their imaginations take over as they were enchanted by tales told by professional storyteller Martin Hunka. The day was organised by Ward Homes which has recently built new homes at Ashdown Place.
Anne Radford, Bonners’ head teacher, said: “The children loved the storytelling sessions and our thanks go to Ward Homes for organising them. Storytelling allows young people’s imaginations to run wild and it has been a real treat for our pupils who listened intently to Martin’s stories which came from all over the world.
“Reading and listening to stories are excellent ways to advance a child’s learning ability and, in some cases, improve behaviour too.”
Pam Reardon, from Ward Homes, commented: “We were delighted to support National Storytelling week this year. It is the second time we have done so. As part of our ongoing education programme we actively promote learning experiences with local schools.”
Set up in 2000 by The Society for Storytelling, National Storytelling Week has been used to increase public awareness of the art, practice and value of storytelling. The Society sees a story as the traditional medium of communication from generation to generation, a tool for education and therapy.
Professional storyteller, Martin Hunka, said: “Storytelling is a great way to enrich lives and strengthen communication skills with all ages, young and old, taking us back to more traditional methods of engaging with one another. Sharing stories between teller and listener feeds the imagination, passes on a wealth of tales from one generation to the next and is a tradition that needs to be continued.”
Meanwhile residents at Bupa care homes in Uckfield, Polegate and Peacehaven also turned the pages of favourite books this week.
Copper Beech House Nursing Centre in Uckfield invited members of the local community along to its ‘fairytales’ themed storytelling event on Wednesday.
Manager, Patricia High, said: “Our residents can liberate their imaginations and be transported to other worlds without even having to leave the comfort of their armchairs.”
The Polegate Nursing Centre hosted a storytelling event the same day and residents at the Haven Nursing Centre in Peacehaven enjoyed a talk on local history on Thursday.
