Arson attack on Burwash home

AN ELDERLY woman was treated for smoke inhalation after an arson attack at her Burwash home.

Police are seeking witnesses and information following the fire which they believe was started deliberately.

At 11pm on Monday, January 30 an elderly woman was alerted by the smell of smoke coming into the front room of the St Ann’s Green bungalow through an air vent.

She managed to get out and then started to tackle the fire whilst the fire service was called.

The woman was treated at the Conquest Hospital, Hastings for the effects of smoke inhalation but was later discharged.

The fire had been set in some waste material left up against the outside wall of the property.

It caused extensive damage to the external fixtures and fittings of the property, and smoke damage to the walls of the front room.

DC Barry Chandler said; “The motive for this worrying incident has not been established and we are keen to hear from anyone who has any information about what happened. You can contact us via 101 quoting serial 1755 of 30/01.”

Inspector James Scott added; “This was a very serious though isolated incident, and could have ended in tragedy. We urge members of the local community to contact us with any information that would assist with this investigation.”
