Award for woman’s tireless work with cancer sufferers

The founder of Polegate charity Children with Cancer Fund has been presented with a special accolade.
Ursula Downton was handed the ‘Most Deserving’ award courtesy of Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club for her invaluable work for families in the community.
Mrs Downton was nominated for the Most Deserving award by Sarah Smith, whose young daughter Maisie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May 2011 aged just five.
Sarah said: “Quite simply, Ursula’s efforts changed our lives”.
Mum of three Mrs Downton said: “I had no idea that I had even been nominated until Heart FM phoned to tell me that I had won. Winning the Award was a fantastic surprise; it’s a great honour and fantastic recognition for the Fund.”
Mrs Downton won a year’s Gold membership for two people to the Ashdown Park County Club.
Mrs Downton is one of the founders of the Polegate charity which works with families whose child is diagnosed with cancer.
She also works full time as a teaching assistant and is mum to, Tyler, 14, Zara, 13, and Jess, 10, who are all involved with the fund which was set up in 1998 by Ursula and members of her family.
The fund organises holidays, trips and fund raising events to grant the wishes of the children who are undergoing treatment,
The Heart FM Most Deserving Awards were in conjunction with Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club.
Ben Booker, general manager of the hotel, said: “We were really inspired by Ursula’s story and the dedication she has shown in helping children with cancer, and their families.”
