Baby Jesse given "helmet" to correct skull deformity
LITTLE Jesse Poni has been fitted with his special "helmet" aimed at correcting a skull deformity - thanks to generous local people.
The Observer highlighted mum Marie's race to raise 2000 so Jesse, who suffers from Flat Head Syndrome, could be fitted with the helmet as soon as possible.
Amazingly in less than two weeks the donations had poured in to pay for the treatment at a private London clinic.
Jesse's brother Oli, 10, and pal Kyle Saunders held a sponsored swim while Marie organised a sponsored pyjama walk and collection along the seafront.
Altogether they raised 1196 and the charity Headstart4Babies offered to pay the rest.
"I wasn't expecting that at all," said delighted Marie. "I thought we'd have to keep fund-raising. It's been fantastic."
As a result Jesse was fitted with his helmet last week and will wear it 23 hours a day for about four months to re-shape his head as it grows.
Said Marie: "He's been superb. He isn't bothered a bit by his helmet which we are now calling his 'hat'.
"I have been amazed how he's taken to it. It just needs some adjusting at the front because it's rubbing his cheek but that will be sorted out this week."
She added: "I would like to thank readers for their kind-hearted donations as without them Jesse would still be awaiting treatment and
every day really does count.
"My friends have been brilliant, including one who has major heath problems but still completed the pyjama walk."
