Banners to illustrate some fascinating facts

Did you know that Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh once worked as a pastry chef on the Newhaven-Dieppe Ferry?

This is just one of the historical but possibly little known facts that could be displayed on lamppost banners around the town thanks to funding from Newhaven Town Council.

The lamppost banners on the West Quay in Newhaven are currently out of date, as they show Celebrating 2012.

They will be replaced with new banners detailing historic facts about the town on the walkway alongside Huggett’s Green.

These Newhaven Uncovered Sound Bites will include ten new banners, presented in a vibrant and colourful lettering.

Newhaven Town Council said this project should be completed quickly as the council will just need the new designs of the banners from the company creating them, planning permission from Lewes District Council and finally time to install them.

The decision was made at the town council meeting at Meeching Hall on Tuesday January 29 in Newhaven.

The ten banners will cost around £2,000 in total.

Amongst some of the other facts which have been suggested could feature on the banners are:

The man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo (Charles Wells) once lived at Fort Road, Newhaven.

The old name for Newhaven was Meeching from a Saxon word meaning “people of the sword”.

Until a big storm in 1579 the River Ouse flowed out to sea at Seaford.

The name Newhaven, meaning New Harbour, only came into use after a new cut to the sea was made at the end of the 18th century.

The deposed King Louis Philippe of France landed at Newhaven in 1848 when he fled from France into exile.

Edward Gibbon wrote part of his famous book “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” whilst staying with his uncle and aunt in Newhaven.

Until 1884 the only ways to cross the river at Newhaven were by ferry or by fording it at low tide.

The Newhaven Lifeboat was founded in 1803 following the terrible wreck of HMS Brazen beneath Castle Hill.

When Lord Lucan vanished in 1974 following the murder of his children’s nanny, his car was found in Norman Road, Newhaven.
