The Biosphere Road Show returns to Lewes tomorrow (Saturday) when Sussex Wildlife Trust is running a stall at the Linklater Pavilion (10am-2pm).

It offers family fun whilst seeking views on proposals to make

the sea, city and landscape around Brighton & Hove and Lewes into a Biosphere Reserve.

Members of the public are invited to go along and meet the Biosphere Here Here campaign volunteers, see a digital photo exhibition of the development of the unique landscape and wildlife found in the area and fill in a questionnaire.

A kids’ quiz and free giveaway of wild flower seeds will also be on offer.

This is part of a three-month consultation on the bid for a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for the area being made by the Brighton & Hove and Lewes Downs Biosphere Partnership.

On Monday, March 4, the Road Show will visit Rodmell Village Hall (9am–4pm) with South Downs National Park Rangers running the stall; and they will then be at Kingston Village Hall on Thursday, March 7 (12–4pm).

Later in the month, the Road Show will tour the coastal communities, visiting Newhaven,Peacehaven and then Telscombe.

Chris Todd, chair of the Biosphere Partnership, said: “This is a great opportunity for people in Lewes District to find out more about what we’re proposing with the Biosphere bid.

“We’re doing our best to visit as many communities as possible to find out what they’ve got to say. In particular, we’re keen to hear what they value most in the area and what changes they would like to see.”

A Biosphere Reserve is an international site of excellence to bring together nature conservation and sustainable development in practice, as a working example of a more balanced relationship between people and nature.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is the body that awards this status.

The reserve area lies roughly between the River Adur to the River Ouse, including the majority of the South Downs National Park, Brighton & Hove, Lewes, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe. It covers some 340 square kilometres, including extending out to sea and is approximately the same size as the Isle of Wight.
