A longer procession of Saxons, pirates and smugglers is promised at Seaford Bonfire this year, as well as better fireworks and one or two surprises.

Seaford Bonfire Society’s night will take place on Saturday October 20 with a procession through the town centre, and fireworks display and bonfire at the Martello Fields.

The society decided no fireworks will be thrown during the procession to make it a safe community event.

Chairman of the Society Steve Russell said: “We are hoping to have hundreds of people in costume from many different bonfire societies taking part in the procession. There will be music but no fireworks will be thrown during the procession as we want this to be a family-friendly and safe event.”

This is only the second Bonfire for the society, after it was formed two years ago.

Last year it attracted a crowd of about 7,000 people and raised more than £1,000 for local charities.

The procession should feature about 500 bonfire boys and girls in total, including members from visiting societies, such as Eastbourne and three societies from Lewes.

Together they will leave their headquarters at the White Lion Pub in Claremont Road at 7.15pm, equipped with 1,500 torches.

Together they will march towards the War Memorial where prayers will be offered and wreaths laid.

The bells of St Leonard’s Church will be rung to call residents to the event.

The procession will then march along Broad Street and High Street to Steyne Road, where it will continue to the Martello Fields, arriving by about 8.30pm. (Continued on page 5.)
