Bride's mum rallies as church roof crumbles
THE Bentley family from Hailsham demonstrated their creative coping mechanisms when a crumbling church roof threatened to wreck their daughter's wedding service.
Emma Bentley, daughter of local councillors Bill and Jo Bentley, married Andrew Smith at Holy Trinity Church, Larkfield, Kent, on Saturday.
Future planning was plain sailing until a section of roof above the chancel fell in shortly before the wedding day.
Engineers propped it up with scaffolding which kept the bride and her attendants safe but spoilt the elegant interior of the beautiful church.
Emma was devastated but Jo rallied round, swathed the edifice in yards of burgundy fabric laced with fresh ivy and flowers to match the colour theme of the wedding.
Bill said: 'The scaffolding was bright yellow so you can imagine we could have had a bit of a colour clash but Jo is very artistic and did a brilliant job.'
By the time the guests got to the reception at the Grange Moor Hotel, Maidstone, everyone agreed the day had been a great success.
The couple were attended by Emma's twin sister Esther and friends Holly and Margaret.
Emma wore a full-skirted, strapless dress studded with diamante and a half veil.
The couple are both retail managers in Maidstone and are currently spending their honeymoon in Venice.
