Lewes Community Football Club is getting support from an unusual source – a work of art that pokes gentle fun at the town.

Laina Watt’s eye-catching creation was purchased by The Gardener’s Arms earlier this year at the Artists United exhibition which helped raise funds for the club.

It is on display at the Cliffe High Street hostelry. The map, which renames the town’s streets (except one), is populated by Bonfire Boys, parking wardens, witches and vegans.

Now local sculptor and print maker Laina has made a number of limited edition prints, which are available for purchase at The Gardener’s at £75 unframed. A donation of £10 from each sale will be made to The Rooks.

Meanwhile, several new businesses have joined the club’s popular Support and Save scheme – aka Rooks Card – which has been running for two years now.

It entitles Rooks owners to discounts of between five and 50 per cent at more than 50 local businesses.

The scheme was the brainchild of Andy Hayes, from Hartleys Off Licence. He said: “As well as supporting local business, each individual owner can easily save more than the £30 annual cost of ownership, just by showing their card when shopping.”

Fellow Rooks fan David Arnold agreed. “I use my card regularly around town and over the year save much more than my £30 outlay,” he said.

Club director Norm Duncan added: “Obviously these savings are a big attraction for our 900 owners, but moreover there’s the opportunity to own your local football club, giving you a say in the running of your club if you want - or just enjoy the discounts!

“That makes the Rooks Card an easy way for people to save money on their Christmas shopping, and a brilliant gift for the football lover in your family.”

Norm said you can sign-up to the scheme via the club website (http://www.lewesfc.com/become-an-owner/). Also, Lewes FC will have a presence in the Cliffe Precinct at weekends in the run-up to Christmas, starting tomorrow (Saturday), and during the Late Night Shopping evening on Thursday, December 5..

“So come for a chat,” added Norm. “You can sign-up and receive your owner’s pack there and then – and we’ll have club merchandise available with 10 per cent discount for owners.”
