Candlesticks were stolen from St Pancras and St Michael’s churches in Lewes.

Lewes Police are warning churches to look out for anyone acting suspiciously in their buildings.

On Friday (January 25), at about 1.30pm, a man was seen leaving St Pancras Church in Irelands Lane carrying a black bin liner.

It was later discovered that three pairs of candlesticks had gone missing from the church.

They were gold painted resin, brown painted turned metal and wooden barley twist, worth around £200 in total.

The man was described as, white, ‘swarthy’, with dark brown curly hair and in his 30s.

Between 9am on Sunday January 27 and 3pm on Tuesday January 29, two 4ft tall, gilded, carved wooden candlesticks were stolen from St Michael’s Church in the High Street.

Anyone with information should call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 952 of 28/01 (St Pancras) or 1210 of 29/01 (St Michael’s).
