Canon Bill Peters

SUSSEX is mourning the death after a short illness of Canon Bill Peters. He was 93 and the last living chaplain who served in the Second World War.

Canon Peters, who lived in Uckfield, was still taking services up until recently, often being asked to conduct weddings and funerals.

Earlier this year he said: “I have been a priest for 70 years this year and I have spent all that time in Sussex, except when I was in the army and canon of a cathedral.”

Canon Peters volunteered as a chaplain during the war, being posted to North Africa and the Middle East, before spending 27 years as Rector of Uckfield as well as chaplain of Brighton College.

In his younger days he was a talented sportsman, playing football for Brighton and Hove Albion as well as cricket for Sussex.

A full obituary will appear in Friday’s Sussex Express.
