Case made for reopening rail link

A new glossy booklet makes the case for the reinstatement of the rail link between Uckfield and Lewes.

Called Wealdenlink - Capacity Solutions for Sussex, Kent, Surrey and London, it presents a case for investment in the line.

Publication has been timed to coincide with the expected releasde of Network Rail's feasibility study into re-opening the Lewes-Uckfield link.

Wealden Line Campaign director Brian Hart said he and Uckfield Town Council members Ian Smith and Duncan Bennett had met Tom Harris, Under Secretary of State for Transport.

The booklet quotes extensively from statements made by Mr Harris at the time including: 'It's a good project, I want this to succeed,' and, 'I think you have a very good case, I would really like this go ahead'.

Mr Hart said Wealdenlink was not about reopening closed lines but addressing the severe capacity issues on overcrowded routes in the busy South East.

He said it would solve a combination of problems for a relatively modest outlay.

Delving into public transport history he said the Wealdenlink routes were always meant to be part of a thriving network before the closures of the 60s.

He added: 'Recent growth dictates that Wealdenlink can only succeed and thereby deliver huge benefits to the public, the industry, the business sector and the environment.'

But he warned it needed political vision and leadership so likely funding sources - the private sector and the rail industry - could be identified and targeted.

The brochure has been circulated to MPs, Members of the House of Lords, Network Rail, train operating firms, media and transport bosses.
